Alternative performance enhancers are intended to have a positive influence on the organism with regard to performance and health. These enhancers include probiotics, prebiotics, enzymes, organic acids/salts, and essential herbs. They can be found under the additional categories of sensory and zootechnical additives (REGULATION (EC) No 1831/2003). [1] .
Enzymes
Enzymes are used in animal nutrition to utilize food components that the organism itself is unable to do.
Not all animals are fully capable of synthesizing the necessary enzymes on their own to process certain nutrients. Adding the required enzymes can significantly improve the energy and nutrient supply for growth. For example, amylases are used to break down starch, and phytases are used to make phosphorus from plant sources available for consumption.
